Why do Good People do Bad Things?

Biblical references...
Genesis 1:26-27...
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.  And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Psalms 33:5... He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.
Ezekiel
18:24... But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked person does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, for them he shall die.
Matthew 6:25-34... Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?  And why are you anxious about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Matthew 7:21-23...  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’  And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
John 3:16... For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Acts 2:38... And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 7:14-25... For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin.  For I do not understand my own actions.  For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.  Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good.  So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.  For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.  For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.  For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.  Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.  So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.  For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin1 that dwells in my members.  Wretched man that I am!  Who will deliver me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!  So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Romans 8:5-11
... For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.  For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.  For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.  Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.  You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.  Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.  But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
James 1:13...
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
1st John 1:7-9...  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Discussion thoughts...
(
1) This is a difficult subject... so lets see what we can discern from the above scriptures.  Genesis 1:26-27 is important because it tells us we are made from Gods own perfect image... so, we start out perfect (except for the "Original Sin" which is passed down to each of us from our parents... all the way back to Adam & Eve... see our discussion on "Original Sin" written on 11-21)  Psalms 33:5 points out that the Lord loves justice, righteousness, and love.  John 3:16, Acts 2:38, 1st John 1:7-9 and other scriptures tell us what we need to do to have life everlasting in Heaven!
(
2) Two of the most scary, horrifying scriptures in the bible are Ezekiel 18:24 and Matthew 7:21-23 until you realize that those scriptures are talking about those who do not confess their sins and ask for forgiveness! (please read our study entitled "
How Can Our Daily Sins be Forgiven?... study dated 6-24).
(
3) Part of the story of Apostle Paul is described in Romans 7:14-25... Apostle Paul, one of the most wonderful Christian men described in the Bible had serious problems in doing things that were evil... please read the scripture above and notice that at the end he explains the solution... "
Who will deliver me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!"  Also notice what James 1:13 says "God does not tempt anyone"... the evil that Paul was experiencing was the Devil!
(
4) There are many other examples in the Bible where "Good People" do "Bad Things"... such as
David (murder and adultery), Noah (drunkenness), Peter (denying Jesus), Moses (losing his temper and striking a rock), Jacob (deceiving his brother Esau), and Samson (engaging in reckless behavior with women); these stories highlight the theme of human fallibility and the potential for redemption even when making serious mistakes.

My Beliefs... life can be difficult... the story about Apostle Paul in Romans is a situation we all face daily when we waver from the strict Christian life... and realize that when a man chosen to be an Apostle had problems, we can understand we might also have problems... if Apostle Paul could not resist the Devil, how can we?  Follow the instructions given above in Romans 8:5-11 and 1st John 1:7-9 and all will be well!  Matthew 6:25-34 makes it very clear that God will provide our needs when we commit ourselves to Him!
