Promises of God!

Research on this topic found many predictions... ranging from 3,000 to 30,000.  30,000 is obviously a bit high considering there are only 31,173 verses in the bible.

Several people have undertaken to determine just how many promises there are... a Canadian schoolteacher Everet R. Storms read thru the bible 27 times... it took Storms a year and a half to compile his list (he broke the promises down as follows... 7,487 promises by God to man; one man to another 991; God the Father to God the Son 2; man to God 290 and several other combinations... including 9 made by Satan (all 9 of which were lies)... his total list included 8,810 promises!  I have been unable to find his list on the web.  However, if you do a search on Internet for "7000 promises of God" you will find a pdf listing of 7000 promises!

We make no attempt to list all 8,810 promises, or even the 7000 list, or even the 365 list... however we do list some of my favorites and a link to a website that lists the 365 promises.  Details of the 365 list and a link to that website is discussed below.

Here are 12 of my personal favorites... some dating back to Sunday School training very early in life... as you read thru this list you will realize how wonderful it is having God as our father!!!  And... if there was any doubt about needing to be a Christian, this list of promises will make you realize that you NEED to be a Christian!  The first promise listed is, of course, the most important!

John 3:16... “For God so loved  the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1 John 1:9...
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Psalm 2:8... Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.

Hebrews 13:5... Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

James 1:5...
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Luke 12:29-31...
And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried.  For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them.  Instead, seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you.

Matthew 6:7-8... “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

1 Corinthians 10:13... No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.  God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Psalm 86:7...
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble, and you will answer me.

Revelation 21:4...
He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

John 14:2-3...
There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.  If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.

Psalm 37:
23-24... The Lord directs the steps of the godly.  He delights in every detail of their lives.  Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.

Before you go to the "365 promises site", please read our comments about their site... be aware that they seem to take liberties with the description of the promise as shown below... the 365 promises list is a wonderful list BUT they seem to take liberties in writing the promise as they see it... they seem to make assumptions on what the scripture really says.  Read the 5 examples shown below and see the major differences between what they write and the actual scripture!  I have not reviewed all their 365 promises... based on the 5 reviewed below, my assumption would be that you need to read their "365 promises" carefully and make your own decisions about the credibility of their site!

Here is how to display the 365 promises mentioned above on your computer... using your computer search engine type in Peace Christian Reformed Church 365 precious promises --- this will bring up a listing of the Peace Christian Reformed Church... Click on "365 Promises of God" and the 365 promises will be displayed (site is a bit slow to respond)... when the page displays... it gives you options... you can read the promises, or download the promises to your computer, or print the list.

The Malachi 3:6 promises site says "I am the Lord your God and I never change"...
the actual scripture says "
I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed."
The Psalm 103:8
promises site says "I am full of mercy and grace and I overflow with love"... the actual scripture says "The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love."
The Psalm 33:11
promises site says "The intentions of My heart will remain steadfast forever"... the actual scripture says
"But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken."
The Genesis 1:27-28
promises site says "I created you in my own image with My special blessing"... the actual scripture says "So God created human beings in his own image.  In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, Be fruitful and multiply.  Fill the earth and govern it.  Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
The Ephesians 1:4-5
promises site says "I chose you to be adapted into My family before creation"... the actual scripture says "Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.  God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.  This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure."

My Beliefs... This is a "short" study, but a very important one.  The bible contains many, many, many wonderful promises made by God.  Be careful reading promises written by others... read the bible direct and pay close attention the the many promises throughout the bible!
